Designs for the Future Start Here
The Burns & McDonnell Engineerium is a new learning laboratory at Science City at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., that invites K-12 students to explore the worlds of robotics and engineering. Through hands-on projects, students design, program and build robots to compete in an obstacle course. And while they're having fun, students also discover how engineering can shape and change their world.
"By exposing students to the challenging and fulfilling world of math and science, we hope to spark an interest in the field of engineering," says Greg Graves, Burns & McDonnell Chairman and CEO.
Our investment, the largest Burns & McDonnell Foundation investment to date, expands Science City's current robotics program to include:
- Additional educational programs for teachers
- Weekend workshops for families
- Outreach to area schools that are financially unable to visit the exhibit
All architectural and engineering design and construction management services were donated by Burns & McDonnell. The architectural design incorporates numerous sustainable features such as:
- Energy-efficient lighting
- Emission-free flooring and paint
- Recycled materials
Taught by certified educators, the curriculum meets national and state standards for science education and will be expanded to include other engineering disciplines.
