Burns & McDonnell gets trademark for program management tool
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Burns & McDonnell has received official notice from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that its proprietary program management software tool, OneTouchPM®, has been issued trademark protection.
The trademark application (serial number 77560498) was filed on Sept. 2, 2008, and was registered on Nov. 17, 2009.
In response to the inherent complexity of managing large projects, Burns & McDonnell developed OneTouchPM® in-house beginning in 2005 as part of its strategy for managing the $1.4 billion Middletown|Norwalk project, a highly complex transmission line upgrade spanning numerous communities in a densely populated region of Connecticut served by Northeast Utilities. The 69-mile, 345-kilovolt transmission line project was completed in early 2009, nearly a year ahead of schedule and significantly under budget, due to a number of new management techniques and new technologies pioneered over the four-year duration of the project.
OneTouchPM® integrates engineering design information with key project management software and mashes all of that information into a three-dimensional virtual model based on a Google Earth interface. By pulling information from several information systems and combining them in a single, easy-to-use interface, OneTouchPM® delivers critical information to decision makers and project stakeholders. The Google Earth proprietary method of streaming large amounts of geospatial data allows remote users to access information in near real-time with little delay. The data collaboration tool provides information on environmental issues, permitting, community relations, design specifications and construction status. It integrates data from ArcGIS, PLS CAD, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Primavera and Expedition with the Google Earth interface.
The federal, state and municipal permissions required for construction of large projects represent the most significant business risk to owners during project development. OneTouchPM® has proven helpful in communicating with regulatory authorities, who can access project cost and project schedule data as part of their approval process, particularly during procedures that are highly dependent upon community and public acceptance.
