Dr. Martin Luther King Drive Streetscaping
Location: St. Louis
Client: City of St. Louis
Completion Date: August 2005
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Grand Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue is an urban arterial in the City of St. Louis suffering from lack of maintenance in an economically challenged neighborhood. In an attempt to aid the revitalization of this area, Burns & McDonnell assisted the city in providing a streetscape to bring a more inviting feel to the neighborhood.
The project team introduced green space, traffic calming measures and ornamental lighting to a one-mile segment of street in a mixed commercial and residential area. In addition, six-foot wide sidewalks with ADA accessible curb ramps were included. The design team also included a tree lawn between the curb and sidewalk, where flowering trees and decorative pedestrian lights were added. Geometric improvements were made at some intersections, which included curb extensions to add green space. The curb extensions added a positive delineation of the parking lane and provided safer pedestrian street crossings.
