Freight Elevator Replacement

Burns & McDonnell is providing continuing services for a freight elevator replacement at the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Tums building seven. This new project is part of the campus master plan that Burns & McDonnell prepared previously for Tums. Tums building seven is a five-story, heavy timber and masonry building. The existing freight elevator was installed in 1920. Burns & McDonnell is designing a new 15,000-pound freight elevator and adding a stop on the roof. A new roof and lighting protection are also included in this project.

This project was identified in the GSK Tums building master facility plan prepared by Burns & McDonnell in 2006. Replacement of the existing freight elevators is necessary to comply with current building and elevator codes and to increase efficiency of GSK’s operations in building seven.

• New, state-of-the-art, 15,000-pounds freight elevator with additional stop on the roof, and a new machine room penthouse
• New 5,000-pounds pallet lift system serving two floors with supplemental stairs
• Removal of existing abandoned fire water storage tanks on roof including penthouse enclosure
• New lighting protection system for building seven
• New ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) roofing system for building seven, including demolition of existing roofing
• New fall protection system for perimeter of building seven
