Municipal Solid Waste Transfer Station

Services to Waste Disposal LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Guthrie-Wilkens, contracted with Burns & McDonnell for the permitting, detailed design and construction of a municipal solid waste (MSW) transfer station, designed to serve the City of Wichita, Kan., and its immediate surrounding area. The facility was developed in close coordination with Waste Management Inc., who is contractually obligated to receive all MSW collected in the Wichita area. In addition, all MSW received at the transfer station is transported to a remote landfill owned and operated by Waste Management Inc.
Under a fast-track schedule, Burns & McDonnell assisted in obtaining local zoning approval from Sedwick County and a construction permit from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Burns & McDonnell efforts were essential in obtaining relief from a zoning requirement to implement off-site road improvements at a minimum cost of $100,000.
The facility is designed to handle 500 tons of MSW per day. The design provides for waste to be tipped onto the concrete floor and pushed into the transfer pit, where it is loaded into open-top transfer trailers.
The facility consists of a pre-engineered metal building, a band of translucent wall panels, concrete tipping floor with dry-shake mineral aggregate floor hardener, transfer truck scales in the pit, entrance truck scales, scale house and office, and stormwater detention pond. The grade changes for the transfer pits were designed with a pre-cast modular block retaining wall system.
The owner, Waste Disposal LLC, served as the general contractor for construction of the facility. Construction phase activities performed by Burns & McDonnell included construction submittal review, evaluating alternative products, design of shoring for transfer pit construction, preparation of reinforcing steel fabrication (shop) drawings, and periodic construction inspections. Burns & McDonnell also participated with the owner/contractor and Waste Management Inc. at critical times during construction to identify and implement measures to expedite construction progress and meet a critical completion date.
