KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Burns & McDonnell, a 100% employee-owned engineering, architecture and construction firm, has been recognized with four 2024 Business Achievement Awards: two each from the Environmental Business Journal (EBJ) and the Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ). These accolades highlight the firm's dedication to environmental leadership, social responsibility and innovative climate solutions.
2024 EBJ Business Achievement Awards
Industry Leadership in Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Compliance. Burns & McDonnell was honored for its proactive approach to the U.S. EPA’s latest CCR Legacy Rule. The firm implemented a comprehensive strategy encompassing regulatory education, standardized compliance frameworks and innovative pilot studies with utility clients. This initiative has set new industry standards in CCR compliance.
Social Contribution: Earth Day Volunteering. To enhance the communities where they live and work, more than 300 Burns & McDonnell employee-owners across 24 cities and three countries engaged in Earth Day 2024 activities. Projects included tree plantings, community gardening and waterway cleanups, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
2024 CCBJ Business Achievement Awards
Project Merit: Direct Air Capture (DAC) Hub. Collaborating with Climeworks, Burns & McDonnell is developing Project Cypress, a state-of-the-art DAC hub in Louisiana. This facility aims to capture and permanently store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, advancing DAC technology and reinforcing United States leadership in global carbon reduction efforts.
Project Merit: Adaptation and Resilience. The firm was recognized for two key projects in this category:
- Limestone Ridge Mississippi River Crossing: Enhancing power reliability while preserving critical bat habitats.
- Park Creek Station Wetland Mitigation Bank: Designing, constructing, restoring and managing 240 acres of wetland and riparian habitats in Colorado, contributing to ecological resilience and biodiversity.
