Burns & McDonnell Wins Engineering Excellence Award for Hawaii National Guard Facility

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The design of the new combined support maintenance shop (CSMS) supporting the Hawaii Army National Guard earned the Engineering Excellence 2023 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Hawaii (ACECH).

The $26.8 million project, designed by Burns & McDonnell, enhances vehicle maintenance while facilitating training opportunities. The new complex includes seven maintenance bays, storage areas, offices and space for administrative work, classrooms, a break room, a locker room, and a controlled waste handling facility. Previous facilities consisted of small buildings that were constructed more than 50 years ago, some of which were not meeting current Army National Guard building requirements.

“Working in close collaboration with the Hawaii Army National Guard, our team designed a combined facility that is resilient while also providing a pleasant work environment for soldiers,” says Tony Paresa, Pacific branch office manager for Burns & McDonnell. “With this new facility, vehicle maintenance and service can be completed efficiently, so the National Guard can be mission-ready. We are grateful for the opportunity to design this critical facility.”

The CSMS was built using durable, sustainable materials that can withstand the tropical environment. Hawaii Army National Guard units now have proper facilities to maintain vehicles and support civilian authorities during natural disasters.

“The Hawaii Army National Guard wanted to prioritize energy savings and sustainability throughout this project, so we performed a 40-year life cycle cost analysis and developed an energy model to determine projected energy savings,” says Mark Zimmerman, U.S. Department of Defense projects director at Burns & McDonnell. “We designed this facility to address the guard’s needs today, but this sustainable facility was constructed to adapt to future needs as well.”
