CALGARY, Alberta — The City of Calgary has selected Burns & McDonnell, a global engineering, architecture and construction firm with a local office in Calgary, to provide charging infrastructure design and construction for Calgary Transit’s electric bus pilot project.
Burns & McDonnell was selected in early November 2021 to specify, design and install electrical charging infrastructure in Calgary Transit’s Spring Gardens garage, which opened in 1975. The depot will charge the pilot project’s 14 fully electric buses, with capacity to expand to 28 electric buses in the future. With fast-charging technology, batteries on the buses are expected to fully charge in about two hours.
“Canada’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050 will depend on strong steps to curb emissions across all sectors, including the municipalities,” says Darcy Wagner, who leads Burns & McDonnell power operations across Canada. “The City is committed to evaluating and incorporating fully electric, electric hybrid and other low-carbon vehicle technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are excited to apply our integrated, multidisciplinary approach to developing a sustainable solution with broad benefits for the community — and one that many other Canadian communities may look to emulate.”
Calgary Transit’s electric bus pilot project aims to test electric bus technology and evaluate the operational, economic and environmental benefits of using electric buses within its system. Burns & McDonnell will provide integrated engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the pilot’s charging infrastructure, which is targeted for completion and operations in fall 2022.
Burns & McDonnell is a leader in electrical infrastructure; Engineering News-Record ranks the firm No. 1 in Power and No. 6 among the Top 100 Design-Build Firms. The company has executed 3.7 billion Canadian dollars of EPC projects in the country, as well as countless engineering projects and programs, led by a Canada-based team staffed with experienced engineers, environmental scientists, and project and construction managers.
