KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Environmental Business Journal is recognizing Burns & McDonnell in three award categories at this year’s EBJ Business Achievement Awards. The publication will host the awards ceremony during its annual Environmental Industry Summit, March 22-24 in San Diego, California.

“As one of the nation’s leading architecture, engineering and construction firms, we are committed to developing effective and sustainable solutions that contribute to the preservation of the environment,” says Steve Nalefski, senior vice president and general manager of the Environmental Services Group for Burns & McDonnell. “Whether we are performing complex site remediation, prioritizing environmental justice efforts or improving site environmental data accessibility, it’s nice to be recognized for the work we do on behalf of our future-focused clients.”

Burns & McDonnell strives to address some of the world’s biggest challenges with innovative and sustainable solutions. The firm’s environmental specialists, engineers, construction professionals, architects, technologists and scientists are designing and influencing infrastructure, programs and research of the future. Burns & McDonnell is receiving awards for two of its technology tools and a client project in the following categories:

Technology Merit: Digital Site Management Tool (DSMT). This web-based application uses a dashboard-style interface to streamline clients’ access to site environmental data. DSMT facilitates streamlined communication with internal and external stakeholders, enables at-a-glance work planning, management and tracking of project execution, and increases transparency for ease in decision making. The tool offers quick access to customized site maps, imagery, graphs, tables and livestreamed data, empowering users with GIS-style capabilities and bringing to life a dynamic Conceptual Site Model (CSM). Clients can simply open their preferred web browser to access the robust platform, which was created for both technical and nontechnical staff — no additional software required.

Information Management: Envolve geospatial and data management tool. Built to increase efficiency, Envolve is a proprietary software that allows users to manage stakeholder engagement throughout the life of projects. By collecting and organizing information essential for project coordination and stakeholder relations, project team members can input and access a wealth of data, empowering everyone on a project to make well-informed decisions.

Envolve software manages critical data, including interactions, workflows, negotiations, commitments, follow-ups and more. The software allows for ease in reporting via dynamic dashboards that deliver the most current project information to interested parties, creating reliable records for regulatory reference.

Project Merit: Tar Creek Operable Unit 2 Superfund Site. Working with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ), Burns & McDonnell is performing remedial design and action services for this project. Former lead and zinc production at the site left behind significant amounts of mining waste that contaminated soil, surface water and groundwater. Since 2019, Burns & McDonnell has provided planning documentation, site investigations, soil sampling and analysis, and design specifications and drawings. Remedial actions have included detailed reporting of existing conditions and activities, excavations, and property restoration. The project team’s community engagement strategy has fostered positive community interaction and has helped prioritize environmental justice efforts communitywide.

Environmental Business Journal is presenting over 70 awards to companies and individuals for their contributions to their industries, the environment and society-at-large during its summit.

“In a year of economic ups and downs in 2022, a number of companies set themselves apart with performance, transactions or projects that merit special consideration,” said Grant Ferrier, editor of Environmental Business Journal and chair of the selection committee. “With energy transition, climate resilience and new federal programs driving business, as well as traditional environmental market drivers in infrastructure, air quality, remediation, water and wastewater, it is understandable that companies are reporting a growing demand for technology and services. Overcoming supply chain challenges, price and wage increases, qualified labor shortages, and general economic upheavals has almost become routine for the resilient company leaders of the environmental industry.”
