CALGARY, Alberta — Burns & McDonnell, an engineering, construction and architecture firm, was recently selected to lead owner’s engineering efforts for the implementation phase of Kineticor’s Cascade Power Project located near Edson, Alberta. Burns & McDonnell previously provided engineering support to assist with project development and onboarding of the power island equipment (PIE) supplier and engineer-procure-construct (EPC) contractor. Moving forward, efforts will include technical oversight and owner consultation throughout the execution of the project.

Work completed during the current phase is expected to round out the anticipated 700 construction jobs and 20 full-time jobs created for operations of the facility. After completing the project development and selection of the PIE supplier and EPC contractor, Kineticor achieved project financial close in August 2020 with the implementation phase and full notice to proceed beginning Aug. 27. Commercial operations are anticipated to commence in 2023.

“Our team is incredibly excited to continue working in the Alberta communities as part of the implementation phase for Kineticor’s Cascade Power Project,” says Jeff Reid, Burns & McDonnell energy Canada director. “Expanding our presence in this local market has been a priority for our firm and crucial to our continued commitment to providing services for this region.”

As part of the owner’s engineering services provided, Burns & McDonnell will participate in design submittal reviews including 3D models, equipment layouts, operations and maintenance provisions, heat balances, electrical one-lines, and instrumentation and controls schematics. The team will also review site grading and drainage, foundations, underground piping and electrical, critical high-energy piping plans, as well as engineered equipment supplier submittals.

The team will also support Kineticor through requests for information and change orders, along with oversight of the project schedule and project controls.
