Burns & McDonnell Awarded EPC Contract for 30-MW Battery Energy Storage System for RWE Renewables

HOUSTON, Texas — Burns & McDonnell has been selected to provide engineer-procure-construct (EPC) services for project Texas Waves II, a 30-MW/ 30-MWh lithium-ion stand-alone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scurry County, Texas.

This battery system will make a meaningful contribution to grid reliability by providing the system operator a backup for lost generation. Additionally, the system has the potential to help reduce the cost of energy to the consumer by storing energy when it is readily available from renewable resources and discharging when energy would otherwise have to be provided from more expensive fossil fuel generation.

The system connects to a key local substation that collects renewable energy from the co-located existing Pyron wind farm and supports the continued growth of renewables in the area.

“We are honored to be the EPC contractor for RWE’s Texas Waves II battery storage project, supporting the expansion of their renewable portfolio,” says Chris Ruckman, vice president of energy storage at Burns & McDonnell. “Adding battery storage in the ERCOT market will be a valuable asset for RWE as they continue supporting their customers with clean, reliable energy.”

The project will consist of owner-provided CATL EnerOne battery racks populated with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery modules. Burns & McDonnell will provide all engineering services for the project, and additionally will self-perform installation of the racks, medium-voltage power station (MVPS) and all balance of system (BOS) equipment. The scope of work provided by the firm includes furnishing custom-designed AC auxiliary panels for battery management system and chiller power. Additionally, Burns & McDonnell will be providing modifications to the existing collection substation, including installation of a new 34.5-kV vacuum breaker, interconnection details, protective relaying and metering upgrades.

The project is expected to be online by year’s end.
