KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Jon A. Schmidt, PE, SECB, a senior associate structural engineer at Burns & McDonnell, is serving a one-year term as president of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA). The council was formed to improve the standard level of practice of the structural engineering profession, and to provide an identifiable resource for those needing communication with the profession.

At Burns & McDonnell, Schmidt works in the Aviation & Federal practice, specializing in the design of Department of Defense facilities with a special focus on antiterrorism measures, including blast resistance. He has been a structural engineer with the firm for nearly 25 years, working on aviation, industrial, commercial and institutional facilities for government, military and private sector clients. His current and past projects include both the modification of existing structures and the design of new construction.

“Jon is a nationally recognized thought leader in the structural engineering profession,” says Don McLaughlin, his department manager in the Aviation & Federal practice. “He is always looking for and seizing ways to get involved, while demonstrating a proven track record of meeting challenges.”

NCSEA has 44 state-level member organizations, including the Structural Engineers Association of Kansas & Missouri, which Schmidt co-founded in 2001. He has been an officer on NCSEA's Board of Directors since 2015, having spent the previous 10 years chairing the editorial board for its magazine, STRUCTURE, and being actively involved in the Advocacy and Structural Licensure committees.
