CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Burns & McDonnell has promoted Paul Pansing to lead its Charlotte office in North Carolina as it works to support significant growth in the region's utility, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing markets. Pansing, who previously served as the office’s manager of electric and gas transmission and distribution, has nearly 15 years of experience in engineering, construction and project management.
The Charlotte office has grown rapidly since opening in 2017 with two people. The firm now employs 40 in Charlotte and expects to more than double its headcount in that office by the end of 2025. In mid-2022, Burns & McDonnell relocated from its original location in uptown Charlotte to new office space totaling nearly 12,000 square feet in Whitehall Corporate Center, 3545 Whitehall Park Drive, Suite 400.
“Paul has worn a number of hats since joining our firm in 2009 and has excelled in every role he has been given,” says Oko Buckle, senior vice president and general manager of Burns & McDonnell in the Southeast. “His leadership and technical excellence have been evident since moving to Charlotte. In less than four years, he has greatly expanded our team and overall presence while building strong relationships with several major regional utilities.”
The Charlotte team focuses primarily on energy-related projects for some of the largest electric and gas utilities in the U.S. Much of the growth is attributed to the need for new or upgraded power infrastructure as solar and onshore and offshore wind facilities are connected to the grid. Engineers and other technical professionals in the Charlotte office support energy projects by designing electric substations and transmission facilities, natural gas pipelines, and upgrades to combined-cycle generation plants. They also perform grid planning studies, environmental assessments and other services.
“The Carolinas and Charlotte especially are among the fastest-growing regions in the country, and I’m excited for the opportunity to support our regional and national clients with the extremely strong talent pool in Charlotte,” Pansing says.
A number of factors are driving the need for design, construction, grid planning and support, and a range of other technical services. These include growth in the energy and utility sectors, regional population growth, new industrial and data center loads, the need for municipal water and wastewater system upgrades, and the expected upsurge in charging load from electric vehicles.
