KANSAS CITY, Missouri (May 3, 2016) — Burns & McDonnell climbed three spots to No. 14 on the prestigious Engineering News-Record (ENR) ranking of Top 500 Design firms. Steady growth in a number of diverse markets produced a record $1.2 billion in engineering and architecture design revenue for the firm in 2015, up more than 9 percent from the previous year.
For the first time in the firm’s history, ENR ranked Burns & McDonnell as the No. 1 engineering design firm in the country serving the electrical power industry, rising from the No. 3 spot last year.
“Burns & McDonnell is playing a leading role in the energy security charge across the country,” says Greg Graves, chairman and CEO of Burns & McDonnell. “We are currently working on some megascale generation and transmission line projects due in part to a demand for cleaner energy.”
Burns & McDonnell earned competitive rankings in several other key market sectors, including:
- Manufacturing, No. 17, fueled by the firm’s growing presence in commercial construction.
- Sewer and Gas, No. 18, a first-time ranking for the firm’s work in the infrastructure segment.
- International, No. 39, a year after the firm positioned Burns & McDonnell International from reactive to proactive in international design work; since then, the firm continues to build upon its growing footprint of business in Canada, South America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
While the number of mergers and acquisitions producing megafirms is on the rise in the industry, Graves says, Burns & McDonnell has generated its own growth organically.
“Our next great acquisition is the next great graduate,” says Graves, who says his growth strategy has remained the same during each of his 13 years as CEO. “We have never grown for growth’s sake. Our strategy is to grow at a pace that is beneficial to our clients and comfortable for our employee-owners.”
