MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan — Burns & McDonnell is providing four $5,000 scholarships for Saskatchewan Polytechnic students pursuing STEM-related coursework at the institution in 2022, with at least two of those designated for recipients with Indigenous ancestry. Additionally, the firm is providing $5,000 and personal volunteering and mentoring support for the institution to apply toward youth career exploration programs and workshops aimed at encouraging women and Indigenous participation in science, technology, engineering and math.

“Saskatchewan Polytechnic does outstanding work in training talented professionals in the province,” says Jeff Reid, Burns & McDonnell energy Canada director. “We are honored to help support the next generation of STEM students through these scholarships, as these bright young minds pursue the education they need to contribute to future local projects like SaskPower’s Great Plains Power Station.”

Kris Brown, Associate Vice President, Advancement, expresses appreciation: “Thank you to Burns & McDonnell for its investment in Saskatchewan Polytechnic students. Scholarships like this make a huge impact in the lives of our students, providing much-needed support and encouragement to help them realize their academic and career goals."

Burns & McDonnell, a leading global engineering and construction firm, has a history spanning more than 75 years in Canada. In recent years it has contributed to energy reliability and sustainability in Saskatchewan through its work for SaskPower on the 353-MW Chinook Power Station in Swift Current and the 360-MW Great Plains Power Station being built in Moose Jaw.

Both Burns & McDonnell and SaskPower have long-standing commitments to support the community. Burns & McDonnell has a robust internal giving back program and is incorporating extensive local resources and labor in its projects. Similarly, SaskPower has an ongoing partnership with Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

“SaskPower is proud to be a sponsor of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, where we have funded scholarships and technology for various engineering programs for more than 20 years,” says Howard Matthews, SaskPower Vice President of Power Production. “We are pleased that Burns & McDonnell has chosen to join us in helping ensure the success of our future workforce.”
