PROJECT

Sierra Estrella Energy Storage

We provided engineer-procure-construct (EPC) services for Plus Power's 250-megawatt (MW)/1,000-megawatt-hour (MWh) lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) in Arizona. The project was completed ahead of schedule and turned over for operations to Salt River Project (SRP).

The project provides grid support in Arizona as the state adds jobs in manufacturing sites. The BESS facility will store sufficient electricity — produced when demand is lower and released when demand is higher — to power 56,000 homes for a four-hour period. The facility is the largest stand-alone energy storage facility in the state, utilizing 276 Tesla Megapacks.

Our team applied innovative execution techniques to complete construction in less than a year. An assembly line approach allowed each discipline to execute work packages in order on a tight schedule. As one team completed foundation pours on the 11.5-acre site, the next was ready to set equipment, followed sequentially with installation of above-grade connections and commissioning. The team also left room for future battery augmentation.

“It was very important to have this project online before summer in Arizona was in full swing. This project will play an important part in helping SRP meet its needs for sustainable and reliable energy.”
