PROJECT

Soybean Preparation Unit

We provided design-build services for the modernization of a soybean processing facility for Cargill. The global food processor’s oilseed processing arm needed to replace a decades-old soybean preparation unit at its existing Cedar Rapids facility.

After evaluating multiple scope options with Cargill, our team designed and constructed a four-story soybean preparation building within 5 yards of existing operating and occupied structures. During that time, soybean deliveries and processing continued 24/7 adjacent to the construction area.

The project emphasis on safety allowed it to achieve zero recordables across the 19 months on this design-build brownfield project. Our design-build team successfully completed multiple critical lifts, all with minimal clearance — often mere inches — from equipment and structures. The lifts included a 250,000-pound rotary conditioner, as well as five modularized conveyor bridges; one of the bridges was 120 feet long, spanning the entire length of the existing prep building.
