Our meaningful public engagement and robust data analysis are enhancing the City of Olathe’s Safety Action Plan under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program.
We facilitated four technical advisory committee meetings, hosted six community pop-up events, developed a Social Pinpoint webpage and online engagement tools, and created the Olathe Safe Streets branding and social media content. These efforts generated over 140 online survey responses, 600 interactive map comments on Social Pinpoint, and engagement with more than 300 community members at in-person events. Our client praised the successful engagement efforts as a thoughtful and intentional gathering of community feedback to inform elements of the Safety Action Plan.
Our team also conducted a crash data analysis and conditions review at key signalized intersections and interchanges in the city and recommended safety countermeasures to address the identified safety concerns. We developed a Safe System Toolbox Practitioner’s Guide that includes information about effectiveness of countermeasures and guidance on implementation of appropriate corridor and intersection safety treatments. The toolbox will be a resource for identifying and comparing potential safety improvements when concerns arise and promote consistency across the city in how, where and when treatments should be used. Our team is now developing a phased implementation plan for safety improvements, which will help Olathe staff plan future transportation safety investments.
As part of this project, we will also develop a safety training module for city staff.
