PROJECT

Three-Party Emergency Water Interconnection

We provided engineering services for a new 30-inch transmission main interconnection serving three water agencies in suburban Chicago.

In a 2008 master plan for the Village of Mount Prospect (VOMP), our team identified risks associated with a potential loss of water supply from VOMP’s primary supplier, the Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (NSMJAWA). While continuing to actively maintain its emergency groundwater wells, VOMP moved to explore alternative emergency backup sources, given high operating costs and lower-quality water associated with the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer system.

VOMP and the Northwest Water Commission (NWC) performed an initial study to evaluate a potential emergency interconnection in 2018. Upon further evaluation and to benefit both VOMP and NWC, a three-party cooperation agreement was pursued. NSMJAWA signed on for a joint interconnection among the three agencies that will provide both NWC and VOMP with an emergency backup water source.

Final completion was accomplished in early 2025. The project includes approximately 1,300 linear feet of 30-inch diameter ductile iron pipe water main, a new meter and a control valve vault.
