Renewable natural gas (RNG) is steadily growing in demand as a sustainable alternative transportation fuel, as well as a drop-in replacement for traditional natural gas, that can help decarbonize municipalities, utilities, institutions and industry through its use in thermal applications and electricity generation. RNG can be produced from a variety of sources, and its utilization helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing methane that may otherwise be emitted and displacing geologic natural gas.
Leveraging RNG relies upon complex facilities and infrastructure to collect, process and convert organic materials into biogas through anaerobic digestion. The type of anaerobic digestion process deployed depends on feedstock characteristics, variable loading rates, retention time, and effective management of residuals (digestate) after anaerobic digestion is completed. Once biogas is generated, several processes remove impurities so the biogas can be beneficially utilized locally or upgraded to natural gas quality and injected into nearby pipeline networks. A critical part of any project is the efficient and accurate evaluation of the anaerobic digestion, biogas pretreatment and upgrading processes in concert with the RNG quality requirements and overall project objectives. With decades of experience with anaerobic digestion and biogas beneficial use, we have helped develop robust and reliable processes on all types of biogas generation facilities.
Our professionals provide deep experience in the full spectrum of consulting, permitting, engineering, construction, commissioning and compliance services. We draw on our understanding and experience with RNG producers, utilities, offtake partners and developers to inform sensible solutions that meet your technical and financial needs.
